What is 'Slow Talk'? – A Southern Poem of Resilience

"Slow Talk" is a powerful, introspective poem by M.W.U. III that captures the essence of Southern resilience and the quiet struggles faced by everyday people. The term "Slow Talk" evokes the gentle, unhurried manner of Southern speech, a style that often reflects the deeper truths and hardships of life in the South. This poem draws readers into the speaker's world—a place where trouble runs "a mile high, six foot deep, three feet wide," symbolizing the relentless challenges that often feel insurmountable. Yet, in true Southern spirit, "Slow Talk" also speaks to a quiet determination, where each hardship is met with patience, hope, and an enduring strength that is passed down through generations. Through vivid imagery and emotional depth, "Slow Talk" resonates with anyone who has faced difficult times but finds strength in their roots and community.

The Story of the 'Slow Talk' Mural at Marcus & Beatty

The "Slow Talk" mural at Marcus & Beatty is more than a piece of art; it’s a testament to the partnership between two Southerners with a shared vision. My business partner, M.W.U. III, wrote the poem "Slow Talk"—words so meaningful to him that they’re tattooed on his knuckles. Together, we brought this mural to life as a reflection of who we are and the bond we’ve formed here at Marcus & Beatty. With my paintbrush translating his words onto our shop’s wall, we wanted this mural to represent not just our collaboration but the spirit of our community.

In our Southern town, where we might “Talk Slow,” we’re out to show that our pace doesn’t mean we’re any less driven. Here, we persevere, lean on one another, and take pride in our unique version of the South. This mural invites visitors to look beyond stereotypes and see the strength, grit, and creativity that define us. It’s a reminder that there’s power in slowing down, listening, and embracing the depth that comes with a life rooted in tradition and community.

About The Artist: B.W.M. III

B.W.M. III, co-founder of Marcus & Beatty, is an artist with a rich creative background influenced by the South’s literary giants, such as Rick Bragg and Winston Groom, and a lifelong need for expression through art and design. Though he’s explored many mediums, from design to tattooing, the "Slow Talk" mural marks his largest project to date, embodying his deep-rooted connection to Southern culture.

Morgan’s artistic philosophy is to capture a place and time, often inspired by his late Aunt, Susan Rheuby, who taught him that art can emerge from any material—sand, paint, even sticks. This mural serves as both a tribute to the South and a way to spark curiosity. It’s designed to draw people in, with small, captivating details like magnolia flowers, Cahaba lilies, a cardinal, and a mischievous raccoon peeking over the words. Through this project, Morgan hopes visitors see art not just as paint on a wall but as a bridge for community and conversation, showing that creativity, when given space, can bring people together and strengthen the bonds of community
